Maritime Academies
The Marine Exchange
of Alaska provides here a list of University Level Maritime Academies
with links to their home pages.
Alaskan residents, particularly high
school students, interested in a maritime career can research admission
requirements to these institutions.
Interested students should be aware
that the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, New York, provides
a 4 year university education at no charge to candidates who can
qualify for admission. The same is true for the United States Coast
Guard Academy and the United States Naval Academy.
The California Maritime Academy in
Vallejo, California, charges tuition, but it has marine industry
sponsored scholarships available for Alaskan students. The other
Maritime Academies in New York, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan and
Texas also charge tuition. All of these schools provide 4 year university
degrees in either marine engineering, marine transportation, meteorology
and oceanography or other career fields applicable to the marine
industry. Graduation from one of these programs normally qualifies
the student to take the U.S. Coast Guard license examination for
third mate oceans unlimited tonnage or third assistant engineer of
steam or motor vessels of any horsepower. For a young person in high
school with good academic credentials and a desire for an exciting
career offering excellent pay and benefits with world wide travel
possibilities, study and attendance at one of these institutions
