TWIC Mobile Enrollment/Activation Updates

The originally scheduled mobile enrollment & activation centers are coming to a close.  The following visits are pending:

The Wrangell mobile activation center will be in operation from from Monday 10/13 through Wed, 10/15.  It will be located at the Wrangell Harbor Office.  Hours: 8:00a-12:00p & 1:00p-5:00p.

The Ketchikan mobile activation center will open for business on Monday, 10/13 through the week of 11/24 (Thanksgiving dates TBD). It will be located in the Ketchikan Harbor Office.  Hours: 8:00a-12:00p & 1:00p-5:00p.
(NOTE: The link above will show that this center will be open until 11/28 - which spans the Thanksgiving holiday.  No decision has been made regarding the hours/availability around Thansgiving, therefore I highly recommend everyone plan to activate prior to this week!)

The Craig mobile activation center will open for business on Monday, 10/27 through Friday, 10/31.  It will be located at the Interisland Ferry Authority office in Craig.  Hours:  Mon/Wed/Fri 8:00a-12:00p & 1:00p-5:00p, Tues/Thurs 12:00p-4:00p & 4:30p-9:00p.
Missed Remote Activation Options

Reprinted from earlier newsletters, but still important info:

As we enter the mobile activation phase in Alaska, there's a possibility some of you might not receive your cards during the scheduled activation visits.  This could be due to being out of town during the visit, your background check not being completed in time for the visit, etc.

For those of you whose cards arrive at a mobile activation site, but who miss the window to pick them up, your cards will be returned to the fixed centers in either Juneau (for SEAK enrollees), or Anchorage (for all other enrollees).  The same goes for the cards which arrive after the mobile activation visit.

At the moment, the only choice you will have if you fall into this category is to arrange to travel to the fixed center to activate your card.  The Marine Exchange is currently working with Lockheed Martin and TSA on the following options:

1) The Marine Exchange has several personnel who are very close to being designated as "Trusted Agents" for TWIC enrollment/activation.  We hope to be able to take care of remote areas we normally travel to during the course of our normal business by providing enrollment and delivering cards for activation. (Update:  Several of us at MXAK have been officially designated as Trusted Agents now.  We are still coming up with a plan of action and working on getting the equipment necessary to perform enrollments/activations)

2) Lockheed Martin is working to develop a process which will allow cards to be transferred from one fixed center to another fixed center.  Although the enrollee will likely have to pay for the express shipping of the card between centers, this will allow the enrollee to activate the card at a center which may be more convenient to get to than Juneau or Anchorage (i.e. Seattle, or other centers in the Lower 48). (Update: This process is still pending, but the effort continues)

Your community not make the list?

As mentioned above, the initial list of mobile enrollment/activation visits are coming to a close.  This original list was based primarily on areas where fairly reliable enrollment data was available.  There is a possibility that several communities did not make this initial list, even though there are significant numbers of potential enrollees located there.  For example, some of the communities that fall into this category could be:
  • Yakutat
  • Fairbanks
  • Nome
  • Kotzebue
  • Red Dog
  • Bristol Bay Region (Dillingham, Bethel, etc)
I have recently gathered detailed potential enrollee info for Nome, but there is very little info for the remainder of Alaska.  If you are located in one of the areas above, and are willing to help with determining the number of potential enrollees in your area, please contact me! (brettfarrell@mxak.org, 907-463-4640).
If I can compile accurate data for these, or other areas in Alaska, I will use it to work with TSA & Lockheed Martin to help continue mobile enrollment.  Unfortunately I can offer no promises, except that without accurate data for these areas there's little chance of ever seeing mobile enrollment.
