Iliuliuk
Harbor, the harbor for Unalaska, may be entered through East
Channel from Iliuliuk Bay or through South Channel from Captains
Bay. The latter channel carries the greater depth and is the
most easily navigated during N weather. The distance through
East Channel is shorter for vessels from Dutch Harbor or the
Bering Sea but South Channel is nearer for vessels from Captains
Bay. Iliuliuk Harbor is small but landlocked with good holding
ground, and an average depth of 10 fathoms. There is sufficient
room for backing and filling in turning a moderate-sized ship.
Violent williwaws are experienced with S gales. Vessels under
200 feet in length have ridden out gales here, but the short
scope of chain allowable usually causes the anchor to drag. Because
of the limited swinging room, an anchorage in Dutch Harbor or
Unalaska Bay is recommended during severe weather. During the
fishing season, the harbor entrances become highly congested
with fishing vessels, and caution should be exercised when entering
or leaving.
