Petersburg is a fishing center on Mitkof Island, on the E side of Wrangell Narrows, 1 mile inside the N entrance. The city has two cold storage plants, four canneries, two oil terminals, and a sawmill. Petersburg is the home port of over 300 fishing boats. The deepest draft of a commercial vessel calling at the port in 1976 was 19 feet. Commodities handled at the port include fish and fish products, logs and lumber products, machinery, petroleum and petroleum products, provisions, and general cargo.
